Awareness

Public campaign: Am I number 12?

World Hepatitis Day (WHD) on the 19th May is a truly global affair with public and political campaigns being implemented via the new World Hepatitis Alliance (WHA)

The pubic campaign will focus on the size of the health challenge facing us for hepatitis B and C. The simple message ‘Am I number 12?’ will be used to highlight that approximately 1 in 12 people in the world has chronic hepatitis B or C which is often undiagnosed and could be any one of us.

Public campaign aims

The aims of the public campaign and World Hepatitis Day are:

> To raise awareness of hepatitis B and C with the general public, people at risk, healthcare providers and government audiences.

> To provide an overall theme within which patient groups in each country can highlight particular national needs.

> To persuade national governments to commit to ‘12 Asks’ (commitments) by 2012. Governments with good hepatitis programmes are being encouraged to become ‘early adopters’ and have their work show-cased.

> To draw together data, not just on prevalence and incidence but also on best practice and barriers to improved outcomes in a ‘Hepatitis Atlas’

> To have the WHO officially adopt World Hepatitis Day, ideally at the 2009 General Assembly.
